Dr Damian Copeland is the the Director of Article 36 Legal, a legal practice specialising the legal review of new weapons, means and methods of warfare including new technology weapons. He is a former legal advisor in the Australian Defence Force, where as as the Director of Operations and International Law he was responsible for completing article 36 legal reviews on behalf of the Australian Government. Damian was a member of the Australian delegation to the Group of Governmental Experts on Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems for a number of years. Since 2023, has chaired expert meetings on the legal review of autonomous weapon systems. Damian is the author of A Functional Approach to the Legal Review of Autonomous Weapon Systems (Brill, 2024).
